    Managing the “New Normal”

    Prior to 2007, conditions for conducting business could not have been more favourable. Inexpensive and widespread access to credit, light regulation, healthy public finances and unprecedented levels of consumer spending combined to create a stable environment in which to create and capitalise on profitable opportunities. 2007 was the year of probably the most famous own goal in history. Goals certainly change games, but not only the score but the game itself has changed. The new game which looks as if it’s here for more than the medium term, will be played in an environment of reduced access to credit but with increased cost, increased regulation, technical innovation, changing demographics, poor public finances and lower expendable income, coupled with a shift eastwards.
