There are many possible paths in a CPA’s journey where each is unique. Discover Oswaldo Vibert’s chosen path.
Oswaldo, you’re a CPA auditor and Senior Consultant in transaction support. How would you describe your role?
I offer transaction support for business buyers. In fact, it’s kind of like being a home inspector. When my clients want to acquire a business, I make sure that its foundations are solid and that there are no hidden defects!
What do you usually do on a daily basis?
The advantage of auditing companies for a potential buyer is that each assignment is different. My role is to examine financial statements and budgets as well as everything related to the company’s finances with a fine-tooth comb. I analyze the documentation, prepare reports and then, together with the partner in charge, present my conclusions.
The point of these presentations is not to tell clients whether or not they should go ahead with a transaction, but rather to ensure they have all the information they need to make an informed decision. With our report, they can validate whether the asking price is appropriate and decide whether it is a strategic acquisition.
I learn a great deal about the company and the industry when doing my audit, so I’m also able to make recommendations. For example, if I discover that 74% of the organization’s revenues come from a single client, I can suggest that the buyer consolidate its relationship with that client before signing.
What do you like the most about what you do?
My team, the working ambiance and proximity to experienced professionals. It’s a great and enjoyable learning environment. I’ve worked in larger firms, so I know that it’s rare to have access to motivating projects in such a dynamic setting.
As far as my position is concerned, it’s really the best of both worlds. I’m broadening my technical skills, learning a lot about how companies work and developing my interpersonal skills. For anyone looking to move up the ladder and obtain a strategic role, this is the perfect school.
