Over the week of May 13, Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton led a delegation of clients, business partners and experts to Fermont and Sept-Îles, to experience first-hand the effervescence of the Plan Nord developments and to better understand the reality of life north of the 49th parallel.

The first mission of its kind to originate from the Montreal area, it brought together various and complimentary fields of expertise, such as financing, infrastructures, workplace psychology, water treatment, mining resource optimization, and residential construction.

In two days, the delegation met with Champion Minerals, the Fermont mayoress, Lise Pelletier, the vice-headman of the Innu community Takuaikan Uashat mak Mani-Utenam, Mike McKenzie, the Sept-Îles mayor, Serge Lévesque, and his Deputy General Manager, Denis Clements, as well as their colleagues in charge of economic development, the president of Métal 7, Christian Michaud, Cégep de Sept-Îles’s General Manager, Donald Bherer, and his colleagues, as well as the Chairman of Sept-Îles Port Administration, Carol Soucy.

M. Soucy, also an experienced helicopter pilot, gave members of the delegation a chance to fully understand the extent of the port facilities’ development implications from an unique aerial perspective.

Members of the delegation are now returning to Montreal with a broader understanding of the Plan Nord, which involves much more than numbers, and provide them with an undeniable advantage with regards to this important project.

In addition to the numerous construction sites already on their way, they observed how a labour shortage is hard to ease when the community also faces a housing shortage. However, despite these challenges, local elected officials and decision-makers maintain a positive and thoughtful outlook and proved tremendously generous towards their visitors.

This first experience is a resounding success for Raymond Chabot Grant Thronton, as is visible in these photos and foreshadows many more inspiring visits to the vast expanse affected by the Plan Nord.
