In the past few days, there have been plenty of questions in the media about tax havens, foreign holdings and taxation in foreign jurisdictions, particularly the State of Delaware.

In the wake of the  abundant news coverage of these subjects in the midst of the election campaign, several media have called on the firm’s specialists to clarify these tax issues.

International Taxation Partner Éric Labelle and Senior Manager and international tax attorney Julie Blouin, shared their wealth of knowledge to demystify some ideas raised in the news, while providing an objective professional point of view.

Once again, Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton’s expertise is in the forefront of complex and strategic issues, whether on radio, on television, in the newspapers or on the Web.

Here is some visibility generated by the participation of the two tax specialists:

Last week, Gaz Métro published its 2013 Sustainability Report according to the guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (“GRI”). Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton’s Sustainable Development and Greenhouse Gas Management Consulting Group is proud to have supported them in this exercise. Gaz Métro is thus the second company in Canada to publish a report according to the most recent GRI standards, the fourth generation published in May 2013. Gaz Métro thereby is adopting a sustainability reporting tool that meets the highest international transparency standards.

A sustainability report measures an organization’s extra-financial performance in sustainability, particularly the social, environmental and economic aspects. These reports are increasingly popular, both in the public sector and in the private sector, with organizations of all sizes. In 2013, the guidelines published by the GRI were followed by over 2,500 organizations worldwide and more than 100 organizations in Canada.

Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton, with the support of its partner Neuvaction, is a key player in sustainability reporting in Quebec. Johanne Gélinas, Partner at Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton, is one of the three trainers accredited in Quebec to offer GRI-certified training.

On February 25, 2014, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton, Emilio B. Imbriglio, and Partner Éric Dufour, accompanied by the Chief Operating Officer of Arianne Phosphate, Jean-Sébastien David, presented the highlights of the analysis of the economic spinoffs of the Lac à Paul mining project in Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean.

This first presentation, delivered at a luncheon of Chambre de commerce du Saguenay members, proved to be a clear success. Apart from the media outreach generated by the activity (see visibility below), the project received the support of the region’s business community.

In the evening, business people from northern Lac-Saint-Jean were able to hear Marc Lévesque, Partner at the St-Félicien office, and Jean-Philippe Brosseau, Manager with the Strategic & Performance Consulting Group at the Québec City office.

The interest shown by people in this large region did not stop there. A third activity was held in Alma a few days later, during which Messrs. Dufour and Brosseau discussed the importance of the regional spinoffs and the impacts of this promising project. In addition, this past March 17, the Chambre de commerce et d’industrie Lac-St-Jean-Est held a conference on the mine project. Messrs. Dufour and David were the presenters (see report).

The Lac à Paul mine’s operations will generate over $12 billion in spinoffs. This project will allow the creation of more than 500 direct jobs per year, in addition to creating over 1,400 direct and indirect jobs during the mining operations period, lasting more than 25 years.

Projet du Lac à Paul d’Arianne Phosphate

Congratulations to Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton’s experts, who efficiently and professionally produced a major economic study regarding a large-scale mining project, furthering wealth creation in the region and in Québec as a whole.
