Should people invest in virtual currencies such as bitcoins? While experts may have differing opinions, they do agree that caution is essential.

Additionally, for many people, the biggest draw with cryptocurrencies is not their monetary value so much as the underlying technology—blockchain—that allows these currencies to function like a digital currency.

Every bitcoin transaction worldwide is recorded in a public database. The technology can be applied in a wide range of fields and according to Louis Roy, Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton Blockchain Leader, “is particularly interesting in terms of revenue traceability.” He added, “In a supply chain, several businesses can share a decentralized ledger rather than having their own. The blockchain reinforces IT security and reduces administrative costs.” Other promising fields where blockchain could be applied are finance and copyright management.

Following the release of an Angus Reid Institute report on the financial difficulties being experienced by Canadians, Stéphane Gauvin, Partner and Licensed Insolvency Trustee with Raymond Chabot, subsidiary of Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton, participated in a series of interviews on Radio-Canada in 6 Canadian provinces to discuss Canadians’ financial situation.

The report, published as part of an examination of poverty in Canada, reveals that more than 25% of Canadians are facing serious financial hardships: 21% stated they cannot afford to go for dental care while one quarter reported they recently had to borrow money to buy groceries.
