A Team Player—On and Off the Court at RCGT

3 min read

There is something of a setter’s mindset in Olivier Ducharme—even far from the volleyball court. In volleyball, that role requires reading the game, communicating effectively, and moving the ball at the right moment. As an audit intern at RCGT, Olivier naturally brings that same approach to his work.

A profile that stands out

A student‑athlete with the Université de Sherbrooke’s Vert & Or program, Olivier balances his accounting studies, training schedule, and professional responsibilities with a strong sense of discipline—one that helps him learn, contribute, and find his place within a team.

He says he felt an immediate connection when he joined RCGT. That first impression was reinforced throughout his internship. With a demanding schedule shaped by practices, training sessions, and travel, Olivier needed a workplace that could understand his reality. At the firm, he found a flexible and respectful team that trusts him to manage his time and deliver his work without constant oversight.

Discipline shaped by sport

Volleyball plays a major role in his life, beyond the competitive aspect alone. “The sport has taught me how to structure my time, stay focused, and handle pressure,” he notes.

Olivier applies that same discipline to his professional work. Team sports have also taught him the importance of listening and trusting others. As a setter, he is at the centre of the action—observing, adjusting, and creating the conditions for the team to move forward.

That mindset translates naturally into the workplace. “I make a point of building strong relationships with everyone,” he says. He sees himself as someone who helps the work move along—on the court and in the office.

Learning by doing

What also stands out in his experience is the level of trust placed in him. Olivier does not describe an internship spent observing from the sidelines. Instead, he shares a hands‑on experience where interns start by learning, then quickly take ownership of meaningful work.

“I don’t feel like just an intern,” he emphasizes. “I’m trusted to prepare files, go to client sites, and take on increasing responsibility.”

During his internship, Olivier participated in compilation, review, and audit engagements. In the spring, he also contributed to the preparation of personal income tax returns. These concrete mandates allow him to strengthen his technical skills while gaining a clearer understanding of professional practice.

This openness goes hand in hand with another key aspect of his experience: curiosity. Olivier enjoys understanding how things work, asking questions, and exploring new tools. He is particularly interested in how artificial intelligence and Excel can be leveraged to improve efficiency. What he appreciates at RCGT is the space given to experimentation and learning—even when things don’t work perfectly on the first attempt.

“If it doesn’t work, I’ll keep trying until it does,” he says. It’s a mindset he applies as much in sport as he does in his professional life.

Finding his path

This internship also helps Olivier confirm his career direction. He wants to explore different experiences to better understand what he enjoys and the type of professional he aims to become. In an already demanding daily routine, the opportunity to learn through real‑world practice takes on even greater value.

At RCGT, he has found an environment where he can progress at his own pace, build confidence, and look ahead to the next stage of his career—approaching the future with seriousness and the team spirit of someone who already understands that success is rarely achieved alone.
