With biophotonics expertise, Olivier Dupont-Therrien now advises technology businesses as an RCGT expert.

Olivier’s scientific journey began with captivating subjects such as black holes, quantum mechanics, and the mysteries of the universe. He earned a bachelor’s degree in theoretical physics before shifting toward more practical horizons. His master’s degree was completed in a chemistry lab, where he developed devices to assist researchers in fluorescence measurement. His doctorate focused on biophotonics at the CERVO Brain Research Centre.

“What truly defines my career is multidisciplinarity,” he explains. This approach has always set him apart. While others specialize, Olivier explores. Where some focus on a single topic, he tackles three simultaneously.

Photonics, Optics, and Entrepreneurship

After his PhD, Olivier spent nearly a decade working with two Quebec-based companies specializing in photonics and optics. He dedicated himself to neuroscience research projects, combining applied research, experimentation, and technical writing.

Simultaneously, he founded his own mobile applications business. Together with his partner, he developed a crossword app that was downloaded nearly one million times.

“I’m not afraid to make mistakes; it doesn’t bother me. I learn as much from my failures as from my successes,” he shares. This mindset has driven him to explore new territories and take calculated risks—qualities that ultimately led him to RCGT.

A Role at the Intersection of Science and Writing

At RCGT, Olivier holds the position of Director of Taxation for Research and Development, where he prepares tax credit claims for scientific research and experimental development, primarily serving high-tech sectors such as optics, photonics, chemistry, and information technology.

“I’ve always enjoyed making complex concepts accessible. In my research projects, I was the one writing reports and synthesizing results for the team.” This ability to translate complex data into clear messages has become his trademark.

Understanding to Communicate Effectively

“In the morning, I might discuss fungi, at noon mathematics, and in the afternoon satellites,” he says enthusiastically. This diversity is a major source of motivation for him.

His work parallels that of a journalist: conducting interviews, visiting laboratories, and analyzing technical data. He then translates his clients’ complex projects into scientific texts that are understandable to government authorities.

Olivier goes beyond simply transcribing information; he seeks to understand what truly makes a project innovative. His attention to detail and precision is supported by a writing talent quickly recognized by his colleagues. His clear style and adaptability across sectors—from chemistry to artificial intelligence—make him a valuable asset to the team.

A Vision for the Future

Olivier sees himself at RCGT for the long term. He aims to continue contributing to Quebec’s innovation ecosystem and to expand the firm’s high-tech client base—a niche where RCGT’s unique expertise stands out. Few accounting firms can claim to have a PhD in physics on their team!

“I work alongside seasoned entrepreneurs who started from scratch,” he says. These encounters inspire and motivate him. Whether supporting a university startup or a large corporation, Olivier helps each client finance their innovation and achieve their ambitions. His advice for those wishing to follow in his footsteps: “Cultivate your curiosity. When you lose the desire to learn something new, this job becomes difficult.”

At RCGT, Olivier has found his place—a place where science meets taxation, curiosity becomes an asset, and an unconventional career path finally finds its meaning.
