It was with great sadness that Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton (RCGT) learned of the passing of Claude Métras on April 16, 2026, at the age of 91. Claude, a leading figure in the Sherbrooke community, leaves behind an outstanding legacy of decades of dedication and commitment on a professional, cultural and community level.
Over the course of his storied career of close to 40 years in a public relations firm, Claude was known for his methodical and professional approach and a global outlook. A true lover of the arts, he contributed to making RCGT a meeting place where business and culture merged by organizing numerous exhibition openings to showcase regional artists.
Claude’s commitment went beyond the professional sphere. He was recognized as an inspiring community builder and tireless volunteer. He also held strategic roles within several institutions such as the Société d’histoire de Sherbrooke, the Musée de la nature et des sciences de Sherbrooke, the Orchestre symphonique de Sherbrooke and the Sherbrooke CEGEP. He also played a pivotal role in developing and promoting the culture of his region, province and country, and he leaves a lasting impression on community life in the Eastern Townships.
A man of commitment who brought people together
Claude was renowned for his rallying spirit, generosity, availability and endless compassion. He was also known for his ability to build relationships and mobilize others around causes that were important to him. His outstanding commitment was recognized in the form of a series of accolades including the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec’s Gold Medal in 2018 to highlight his outstanding commitment to culture, arts and community in the Eastern Townships. In 2012, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and conferred with the title of Grand Estrien in 2002.
Furthermore, an annual award in his name, the Prix Claude Métras, showcases the artistic talent of painting, photography and sculpture students in Sherbrooke.
The entire RCGT team would like to pay tribute to a highly respected colleague and deeply committed citizen, and to extend our most sincere condolences to his family, loved ones and everyone who was lucky enough to know Claude.
