As a Licensed Insolvency Trustee at RCGT, Vicky Var supports individuals facing debt with rigor, empathy, and a strong solution-oriented mindset.
“I consider myself a fully fulfilled insolvency professional,” Vicky Var states upfront. Yet, nothing initially pointed her toward this field. Passionate about organic chemistry and the periodic table, she first pursued a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. She appreciated the logical nature of science, the structure of molecules, and the conceptual dimension of matter.
Over time, however, she realized she did not envision a long-term career in a laboratory. “I enjoyed the theory, but I couldn’t see myself in the day-to-day reality of the job,” she explains. She left chemistry in her third year and transitioned into accounting, drawn by its more practical nature.
The turning point came when she secured a summer position at a trustee firm, where she prepared tax returns for individuals in bankruptcy. “At first, I didn’t really know what a trustee did,” she recalls. “But once I stepped into this field, I felt a bit like Obelix falling into the magic potion,” she adds with a smile. “I’ve never really left it since.”
Today a Licensed Insolvency Trustee at RCGT, Vicky works with individuals from all walks of life—from salaried employees to highly compensated professionals, self-employed workers, and social assistance recipients. “No one is immune to financial difficulties. We can all go through a period when the numbers no longer add up,” she notes.
For her, empathy is essential to the profession. “People often come to us in a state of great vulnerability. They are stressed, worried, sometimes even ashamed. If we don’t understand what they’re going through, we can’t help them effectively,” she explains.
This is where her pragmatic nature comes into play. “I’m very practical. When someone walks through my door, I know that a solution exists. I can already see how we can lighten their burden.” Her role is then to clearly present the available options, always within the framework of the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act.
For Vicky, a trustee’s mandate goes beyond administering a process.
“Restructuring or eliminating debt is part of the solution. But if we don’t address the root causes, the person may find themselves back in the same situation a few years later.”
She therefore emphasizes longer-term support, including budgeting workshops, identifying consumer pitfalls, and reflecting on financial priorities.
“The goal is to help people regain control of their finances and restore a sense of stability in their daily lives.” This approach also reflects the strength of the team at RCGT: support goes beyond a technical solution to encompass a comprehensive understanding of each individual’s situation.
Vicky’s commitment does not stop at the office door. For several years, she has been involved in humanitarian initiatives focused on access to water and education, including building wells and schools, and providing school supplies in underserved communities.
On the ground, priorities are simple: access to clean water, a classroom, a notebook, and a pencil. “These experiences change your perspective,” she says. “They remind us how fragile access to basic resources remains for part of the population.”
Whether in her office or in the field, Vicky remains guided by the same purpose: helping people rebuild stronger foundations so they can move forward with confidence.
