Vicky Var: A Trustee by Calling

From the outset, Vicky admits that insolvency is where she found a career that truly fulfills her. It is a sense of purpose that has been nurtured by a firm that fosters an environment where people can learn, grow, and genuinely find their place.
Yet, this path was far from obvious.
Initially, Vicky was drawn to organic chemistry, the periodic table, and the structured logic of science. She even began a bachelor's degree in chemistry, attracted by the discipline's analytical and conceptual nature.
Over time, however, she realized she could not envision herself building a career in a laboratory.
“I loved the theory, but I couldn't see myself in the day-to-day reality of the profession,” she recalls.
Seeking a role with a more tangible impact, she pivoted toward accounting.
The turning point came when she secured a summer position at an insolvency firm, preparing tax returns for individuals in bankruptcy.
“At first, I didn't really know what a trustee did. But once I stepped into this field, I felt like Obelix falling into the magic potion. I've never really come out of it,” she says with a laugh.
The profession quickly became an obvious fit. It brought together two qualities that have always defined her: a genuine sensitivity to people's challenges and a calm, analytical mindset when it comes to assessing situations, making decisions, and taking action.
Since joining RCGT in 2014, Vicky has supported a diverse clientele, including employees, self-employed professionals, retirees, and entrepreneurs, all of whom have experienced financial imbalance at some point in their lives.
“No one is immune to financial hardship. Any of us can face a period where the numbers simply no longer add up,” she explains.
In those situations, listening becomes essential.
Clients often arrive feeling stressed, worried, and sometimes even ashamed. For Vicky, creating a safe, judgment-free environment is a critical first step.
She takes time to understand not only their financial situation but also the personal journey that led them there. While some stories resonate deeply, her practical nature and ability to maintain the right professional distance allow her to channel emotion into concrete, structured, and reassuring solutions.
As an officer of the court, she clearly explains the various avenues available to clients, whether informal solutions such as debt consolidation or formal remedies under Canada's Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act.
Vicky emphasizes that the role of a Licensed Insolvency Trustee goes far beyond filing a legal proceeding.
“Restructuring or eliminating debt is only part of the solution. If we don't address the root cause, there's a good chance the individual will end up in the same situation again.”
Behind every file is a team working together toward a common goal. Like a hive, each person brings unique expertise to the table. The work is serious, but never without a sense of camaraderie. Ideas flow freely, collaboration comes naturally, and enjoyment remains part of everyday life.

“The goal is to help people regain control of their finances and move forward with greater peace of mind,” she says.

Vicky's passion for her profession has never faded since her first encounter with what became her famous “magic potion.” To this day, she speaks about her work with the same enthusiasm.

In the insolvency practice, she contributes to developing future professionals by passing on her experience, expertise, and practical insights into the profession.
She encourages young people to stay curious, ask questions, and remain open to opportunities that may initially seem unfamiliar.
“You don't always find your path on the first try. Sometimes you make the wrong choice, and that's perfectly normal,” she says.
In her view, the most rewarding and meaningful careers are often built by stepping outside one's comfort zone, exploring different possibilities, and embracing new discoveries.
Vicky's dedication goes well beyond her professional practice.
For many years, she and her extended family have been involved in humanitarian initiatives focused on access to clean water and education. Their efforts have included building wells and schools, as well as distributing school supplies in underserved communities.
At the local level, the priorities are simple, yet fundamental: clean drinking water, a classroom, a notebook, and a pencil.
“These experiences change the way you see the world. They bring you back to what truly matters,” she reflects.
These experiences continue to fuel her desire to make a tangible difference and contribute, in her own way, to improving the lives of others.
