Dental Care Programs

Federal

Interim Canada Dental Benefit35
Since October 1, 2022, the Interim Canadian Dental Benefit is a payment for dental care for a child under age 12 available to eligible families earning less than $90,000 per year. Depending on family income, the tax-free payment is $260, $390 or $650 per eligible child.36A maximum of two payments can be claimed per child. There are two benefit periods: October 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023 and July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024.37The new Canadian Dental Care Plan, due to come into effect shortly, would replace this temporary benefit.

Quebec38

In Quebec, the Régie de l’assurance-maladie covers certain dental care costs for children under 10, such as annual check-ups and fillings.39It also covers certain costs for beneficiaries of a financial assistance program with a claim booklet.

Ontario

Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program40
The Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program (OSDCP) provides complete routine dental care coverage and partial coverage for dental prosthetics, including dentures, for individuals aged 65 and over with a maximum annual income $22,200 ($37,100 for a couple). Taxpayers must enroll in order to benefit from the program. For subsequent years, eligibility is automatically confirmed once tax returns have been filed.

Healthy Smiles Ontario program41
Health Smiles Ontario is a free dental program that covers regular examinations, preventive services and treatments for youth under the age of 18. The child must be enrolled to benefit from the program and eligibility is determined on the basis of household income.

New Brunswick

Dental care program42
New Brunswick’s dental care program covers examinations and X-rays, prostheses and repairs, and certain types of fillings for recipients of the province’s social assistance program.

Healthy Smiles, Clear Vision43
Healthy Smiles, Clear Vision is, among other things, a free dental care program that covers regular check-ups, X-rays and tooth extraction for young people under the age of 19. Registration is required for this program, and eligibility is based on household income.
